The Sykes Gem Awards celebrate holiday properties that far exceed usual standards. With categories ranging from Best Newcomer to Best Farm Stay, Westhayes has been honoured with gold in the Best for Sustainability category.
The Gem Awards
We are so thankful to have been given this award recognising the dedication of our team in maintaining an environment-first approach to holidays at Helsbury Park. Westhayes is a renovated 200-year old barn which balances history and character with modern comfort. It also incorporates many environmentally conscious practices and features. We support local businesses and use environmentally friendly methods and products wherever practical.
We installed PV panels a decade ago and an electric car charger last year. Cornwall has recently become the first local authority area to hit its renewable energy milestone. With now 40,873 installations of renewable products in the county, we are proud to contribute to that achievement. We have generated 150,000 kwh of electricity on site so far. The Gem Award recognises our commitment to low impact business practices and our beautiful natural environment. We are delighted that this award marks our 20th anniversary of holiday letting. There is no better way to celebrate.
Helsbury’s Ecosystem
Helsbury Park is a pillar of the local landscape and its historic significance makes it vital we preserve it for future generations. Helsbury Park was created as a deer park for the first Duke of Cornwall and you can still see deer in our temperate rainforest. Look out for hoof prints or other signs of them. Our woods are a SSSI that deserves our protection. We have planted over 200 additional trees to date. Helsbury is also home to parkland which we cultivate to provide varied habitats and it has recently been reclassified as species rich grassland. Helsbury Park is a haven for wildlife covering the whole food chain and we work hard to support it. This is why we are so grateful that our sustainability efforts have been rewarded.
