Cornish Gig Racing

Cornish gig racing – a sport steeped in rich maritime heritage. This past Sunday, the sport graced our coastline at Port Gaverne, a gorgeous spot to swim or kayak. With its pub and café, perfect for a post-sea cheesy chips and coffee, it really is a wonderful location.

What Is Gig Racing?

Cornish gig racing originated in the early 19th century. These six-oared rowing boats, crafted from Cornish elm, were designed for speed and agility to navigate treacherous waters. The sport evolved from these practical beginnings of lifeboat and piloting services, with the first organized races emerging as local fishermen and pilots competed for maritime supremacy. The Cornish Pilot Gig Association, formed in 1986, played a crucial role in reviving and standardizing the sport. Today, Cornish gig racing celebrates its rich heritage, drawing global competitors and enthusiasts to events like the annual World Pilot Gig Championships.

Port Gaverne

Continuing with the theme of Cornish heritage, Port Gaverne boasts a rich maritime history, once serving as a bustling port for shipping slate and other goods. This arguably makes it the perfect location to honour a sport so rich in tradition. Aside from its fascinating past, Port Gaverne truly is a gem of the Cornish coastline. Its picturesque scenery, opportunities for water sports, and cliff walks make it ideal for a day out for the whole family.

And it is dog friendly. What more could you ask for?

Water Sports
